PhD Concentrations Entrepreneurship Faculty

Faculty in the Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship department are interested in strategic management, organizational studies, entrepreneurship, ethics, and international management. Their research orientation is the development of theory that is driven by applied managerial and organizational problems. Faculty research and teaching interests range from competitive strategy, new business creation, inter-firm networks and innovation, to ethics, team dynamics, negotiation and the management of global businesses.

Mary Benner
Department Chair, John and Nancy Lindahl Professor for Excellence in Business Education, Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship Academic Director

Mary Benner is Department Chair and Professor in the Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship Department. She has a PhD in management from Columbia University, an MBA from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, and a BS in economics from the University of Minnesota. She joined the Carlson School in 2010.

Daniel Forbes is an Associate Professor in the Strategic Management & Entrepreneurship department at the Carlson School. He has also been named a Schulze Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship by the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation.

Russell Funk
Associate Professor

Russell Funk is an assistant professor in the Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship group at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. Before joining the faculty at Minnesota, he earned his PhD in economic sociology at the University of Michigan, where he received fellowships from the National Science Foundation and the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

Aseem Kaul
Professor, The Mosaic Company - Jim Prokopanko Professor for Corporate Responsibility

Aseem joined the Carlson School in 2009, having completed his PhD in Management from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Aseem's research focuses on the relationship between firm scope and capabilities, examining how new capabilities and technologies are best governed and organized, and how the organizational boundary choices firms make impact their subsequent innovation.

Jiao Luo
Associate Professor

Jiao (pronounced 'jyow') Luo joined the Carlson School in 2012, having received her doctoral training in management and organizational theory at Columbia Business School. Jiao's research is at the intersection of organization theory and non-market strategy.

Ian Maitland
Professor

Ian Maitland is professor currently teaching classes in business ethics and international business. Professor Maitland also has taught in the Carlson School's China and Warsaw Executive MBA programs and the Management of Technology Master's Program, as well as being a Visiting Professor at Keio University in Tokyo in 2001.

Alfred Marcus in 2022 won the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Academy of Management Organizations and Natural Environment Division.

Myles Shaver is Professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management where he holds the Curtis L. Carlson Chair in Corporate Strategy.

Paul M. Vaaler
Professor and John and Bruce Mooty Chair in Law & Business

Gurneeta Vasudeva Singh
Associate Professor

Gurneeta Vasudeva joined the Carlson School of Management in 2007, prior to which she worked at the Indian School of Business for two years. Her doctoral thesis on how national institutions shape firms' approaches to technological innovation and knowledge transfers won the best dissertation awards from the Academy of Management and the Academy of International Business.

Joel Waldfogel
Associate Dean of MBA Programs, Professor

Joel Waldfogel was previously the Ehrenkranz Family Professor of Business and Public Policy at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he and had served as department chair and associate vice dean. Prior to Wharton, Waldfogel was an associate professor of economics at Yale University.

Sandy Yu
Assistant Professor

Sandy Yu is an Assistant Professor in the Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship department at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. Her research examines key strategic concerns of entrepreneurs: fundraising and growth. Her current work focuses on the impact of start-up financing from sources such as venture capital, accelerators, and crowdfunding.

Sri Zaheer
Dean Emerita and Elmer L. Andersen Chair in Global Corporate Social Responsibility

Srilata (Sri) Zaheer became the 12th dean of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota on March 8, 2012. She served in this role until July 2, 2023.

Aks Zaheer received his PhD in strategic management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Master's in Business from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad.

Shaker A. Zahra is  Robert E. Buuck Chair of Entrepreneurship and Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Carlson School of Management, the University of Minnesota. He  has served as the department chair (9 years), Director of the Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship (10 years), and the Academic Co-Director of Carlson Ventures Enterprises.

Alan Fine
Senior Lecturer

Alan Raymond Fine has been a faculty member at the Carlson School since 1995.  He was a founder of the Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program (submitting a proposal for the program with Alfie Marcus, Priti Shah, Bruce Erickson, and Dick Cardozo [and which was ultimately approved by the curriculum committee in 1998]) and served as its first director.

Rand Park is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship. Stuart Albert is an Associate Professor in the Strategic Management and Organization Department. Albert is an expert on the topic of timing. Some of his major publications include The Timing of Dissent and Towards a Theory of Timing: An Archival Study of Timing Decisions in the Persian Gulf War.
