Medical Industry Leadership Institute Courses
The Carlson School and other colleges at the University of Minnesota offer a wide variety of courses intended to enhance understanding of the medical industry and to prepare students for successful and rewarding careers.
MILI 6235: Pharmaceutical Industry (2 cr)
Focusing on the unique characteristics of the pharmaceutical industry, including its market, regulation, and policy issues, this course leverages interdisciplinary perspectives and industry leader involvement to develop student skill sets.
MILI 6421: Topics - Healthcare Law: Strategic and Business Implications (2 cr)
This course will survey fundamental healthcare laws that apply to a wide variety of healthcare businesses, and will examine their impact on business strategy and operations. The goal is to enable current and prospective managers and leaders in the healthcare space to understand compliance requirements and how healthcare law impacts business strategy and decisions. The course will address key current healthcare policy challenges and how these impact business environment and strategy.
MILI 6562: Information Technology in Healthcare (2 cr)
This course provides a theoretical and conceptual base for managers, creators, and evaluators of health care information technology, including the application of current and evolving technology systems. Special attention is paid to the design and evaluation of common data structures.
MILI 6589: Medical Technology Evaluation and Market Research (2 cr)
Leaders from UnitedHealth Group, Medtronic, and the Mayo Clinic participate in this hands-on experience in creating a value proposition for new medical technologies. This course is also offered as a 2 cr. undergraduate seminar (MILI 5589)
MILI 6726: Medical Device Industry: Business and Public Policy (3 cr)
This course addresses the multiple decision-makers and public-private sector interactions that are critical for medical device development, market entry, and success. Utilizing case studies, current product innovation, and insight from regional industry leaders, the course highlights the business, public policy, regulatory, and technology management issues that concern medical device and biotechnology companies.
MILI 6920: Healthcare Payers: US and Global (2 cr)
This course helps students understand the role payers play in the healthcare system. We capture the health insurance industry’s evolution through discussion of past and current events, resolve common misconceptions about private health insurers, and deepen the understanding of public and private payers’ role in health financing. Rooted in comparative research methodology, in this course, we will dive deep into various health systems’ financing structures across the globe, including Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, to gain important insights about the financing of our own health system.
MILI 6963: Healthcare Market Analytics (2 cr)
This course prepares students to analyze large health care databases with a focus on advanced applications with health insurance claims data. It is designed to be a STEM offering with the use of statistical programming languages including R, Tableau and SAS and is designed to appeal to students with an interest in developing data science as core skill and already have knowledge of some programming tools, and experience with data manipulation in Excel, SQL or Access.
MILI 6985: The Healthcare Marketplace (2 cr)
Survey of multitrillion dollar medical industry, this course covers physician and hospital services, insurance, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, information technology, and industry scale, interactions, opportunities, and barriers. This course is also offered as a 2 cr. undergraduate seminar (MILI 5990).
MILI 6991: Anatomy and Physiology for Managers (2 cr)
A basic overview of the medical vocabulary and physiology of major body systems for non-clinician managers, this course helps medical industry leaders gain facility with clinical practice and medical technology innovations.
MILI 6992: Healthcare Delivery Innovations: Optimizing Cost and Quality (2 cr)
Understand the various sites of healthcare delivery, analyze how the components along the care continuum currently fit together to provide healthcare, and more importantly explore how they can be reconfigured and re-engineered in innovative ways to create value for the end consumer.
MILI 6995: Medical Industry Valuation Laboratory (2 cr)
Hands on experience in succinctly evaluating the value of a new technology by considering market size and potential, intellectual property, and return on investment. Intercollegiate teams create rapid production market analysis of promising medical technologies and services to determine potential for success in market. Teams consist of students from Carlson, CLA, CSE and AHC. Exposure to University innovations, venture firms, inventors. This course is offered by application only as a 2 cr. Undergraduate semester-long seminar (MILI 5995). This course is also offered as a 10 cr. year long enterprise alternative for FT MBA Students (MILI 6996).
MILI 6997: Global Valuation Laboratory; IBUS 6997: International (CGI) Valuation Laboratory (4 cr)
Similar to MILI 6995, teams of students will complete on project combined with a mix of class sessions, research, site visits and group work. The lab is geared to provide participants with an opportunity to work on a global valuation project. Course will consist of pre-departure sessions as well as ten-day on site program in California in early January. IBUS 6997 is an international version of this course, currently being offered in Stockholm Sweden and Cambridge UK
SCO 6096: Supply Chain Management in the Health Care & Medical Devices Sector (2 cr)
The course advances an end-to-end, supply chain–centric view of the health care and medical devices sector – i.e., linking the development of care to the delivery of care. The course highlights the interdependencies between organizations on the upstream (e.g., medical devices, pharma, and biotech firms) and downstream (e.g., hospitals and clinics) of the health care supply chain.
MILI 3585: Navigating the Healthcare Marketplace (Fall, 3 cr)
The healthcare marketplace constitutes nearly three trillion dollars in the United States and several trillion spent throughout the world. With growing demand for medical technology and the aging of the population, the scale and complexity of the healthcare supply chain is expected to dramatically increase over the next two decades. The healthcare sector is comprised of several markets for goods and services, including physician services, hospital services, insurance, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and information technology. This course aims to provide a survey of the health sector to understand the scale, market opportunities, as well as barriers to this expanding and global industry. (14 weeks, Social Science Liberal Education Core)
MILI 3589: Medical Technology and Society (Spring, 3 cr)
Innovations in medical technologies are one of the leading areas of economic growth in the world. Whether new technologies take the form of pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology, information technology or some combination of these innovations, the opportunities for both private enterprise and social welfare are substantial. However, these innovations are not without cost, and require reimbursement from either a privately or publicly financed healthcare delivery system. Thus, the demand for the evaluation of new medical technologies continues to grow as new treatments are developed and healthcare costs continue to rise. This courses aims to provide knowledge of the skills, data, and methodology required to critically evaluate new medical technologies from a social perspective as well as from a business perspective in order to meet financial investment and regulatory compliance objectives. (14 weeks, Technology & Society Liberal Education Theme)

By the completion of this course, the student should have acquired a broad perspective on the use of information systems for healthcare management decisions. (Spring term, 14 weeks)
