Carlson Global Institute: IT Entrepreneurship
The MIS Department has launched a Undergraduate Global Enrichment course on “Innovating with Technology - Global IT Entrepreneurship in Action” (IBUS 3055), which is offered through the Carlson Global Institute. It provides state-of-the-art knowledge about Information Technologies and fundamentals of entrepreneurship with an international learning experience in some of leading IT innovation hubs around the world.
In 2019, the students visited Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen in China. During their visit, the students interacted with business and technology leaders from several famous companies like Alibaba, Tencent, DJI, HAX. In 2020, the students will be traveling to European centers of IT innovation in Germany and Austria.
Over the last decade, dramatic changes in technologies, economic conditions, and geopolitical developments have opened new business opportunities in international markets both for new high-tech ventures and for the already established companies. Increasingly, US-based companies and entrepreneurs need to understand the role of culturalization and adaptation of their IT products for success in international markets, particularly in fast-growing markets. This initiative is designed to help students become better global citizens while gaining a wider perspective of technology-driven business innovation around the world.
Coursera: Information Systems Specialization
As a founding school for the Management Information Systems (MIS) discipline and the home to MIS Quarterly, one of the top academic journals in the field, the department has embraced online learning platforms to help disseminate knowledge of the field. In 2019, the department launched a Management Information Systems Specialization in partnership with Coursera.
This specialization provides a robust introduction to the key principles and practices of Information Systems Management. The four courses forming this specialization provide an overview of how Information Systems address business problems, how the solutions are modeled, the capabilities of modern enterprise systems, and the latest trends in information technology.
