Program Details
- Wirtschaftuniversität Wien is the European Union's largest educational institution for business and economics, business law, and social sciences.
- The International Summer University at WU (ISU WU) is an intensive short program for students from WU and WU partner institutions such as Minnesota Carlson. Taking place in Vienna, this program lasts for three weeks and features business-related courses
- Vienna is one of the most livable and safest cities in the world. It has a vibrant cultural life as well as many open spaces and an excellent infrastructure. These factors make Vienna an ideal university town.
- 1.7 million people live in the city of Vienna while 2.4 million people live in the greater metropolitan area. Its location in the center of Europe makes it an important hub for international organizations and companies.
- Participants are responsible for selecting and securing their own housing.
- The Carlson Global Institute strongly encourages students to live in the on-campus housing options as those are affiliated with and vetted by WU.
- Students should check the ISU WU website and fact sheet for specific accommodations information including on-campus and off-campus options, application process and deadline, and cost information.
- WU has recommended accommodations for ISU WU participants in off-campus apartments or student residence halls for the duration of the ISU WU program. Students will book their own accommodation for the duration of the program. The recommended accommodations offer special pricing for participants.
- Students who would like to arrive before and stay after the official ISU WU program dates will need to arrange their own accommodations
- The program consists of two intensive courses, which are taught consecutively over the course of 3 weeks. Students are required to complete both courses.
- Undergraduate students earn 4 UMN credits total.
- Specific course information can be found on the ISU WU website starting late 2025/early 2026.
- Review the Carlson Course Equivalency Database for courses that past students have petitioned for certain major or minor credits here at Carlson (UMN login required).
- Students may also submit new petitions. Instructions can be found in the equivalency database.
- Courses from this program will be listed as transfer credit on the official UMN transcript. Transfer credit does not affect overall GPA.
- No host country language skills required
- Preferred minimum GPA of 3.0
- Students are held to business course prerequisites of the host institution
- CGI strongly recommends that students completed both semesters of I-CORE prior to participating on a business exchange program, although it is not required. For students who want to participate on a business exchange program prior to completing both I-CORE semesters:
- Students pursuing a Marketing, MIS, or ACCT major need to have completed MAROON I-CORE prior to participating on a business exchange program
- Students pursuing a Finance, Entre, SCO, or HRIR major need to have completed GOLD I-CORE prior to participating on a business exchange program
- Although not required, we encourage students to complete some more major courses prior to participating on a business exchange program. Students should plan closely with their academic advisers prior to participating on a business exchange program.
- The University of Minnesota shall provide equal access to and opportunity in its programs, facilities, and employment without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
All Carlson students are responsible for obtaining a passport before they participate on a study abroad program. All students participating on a summer program will be responsible for obtaining a visa or residence permit if required by their host country. The Carlson Global Institute does not process visa applications for students participating on exchange programs.
- Why is this particular summer program and host university a good fit for you? Please list 2 examples specific to your host institution. It can relate to your academics, personal goals, or professional goals. Additionally, how do you plan to engage in the communities in your host school?
- Exchange programs require students to demonstrate a great deal of flexibility and adaptability. Many Carlson students find the adjustment to a new academic environment to be challenging. Please share a personal example of a time you demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in a challenging academic situation when you did not agree with the outcome. What did you learn from this experience and how will it help you be successful on a summer exchange program?
Students must use their UMN email address when creating their application account with UMN, as well as when they apply directly to the host university abroad. Students will be charged a $50 application fee. Applications will be reviewed and students will be informed of their application status within two weeks of submission.
Applications will only be reviewed when the following is complete:
1.) Application essay addressing the following questions. The total essay cannot exceed 500 words in total.
