Name Consistency Conventions
To avoid problems or delays in obtaining your visa and entering the United States, make sure your name is entered correctly and consistently on all documents:
- Ensure that the First Name and Last Name fields on your application and immigration documents reflect the name exactly as it appears in your passport.
- Do not use nicknames or shortened names on any of your documents, including your application, passport, I-20, or any additional documents that you acquire after arrival in the United States.
- If you have more than one last name (for example, your mother's and father's last names), be sure to put both names in the Last Name field.
