Reflections from Yesterday's Football Game

Saturday, September 10, 2011

In Minnesota, there aren't many better ways to spend a fall day than watching the Gophers play while reconnecting with Carlson School students, alumni, benefactors and friends. The game on Saturday had all of these elements and was emotional as well with the Gophers comeback effort and Coach Kil l's struggle. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

What made this game particularly poignant was the tribute to one of our alums, Tom Burnett, Jr.

Tom earned his BSB from the Carlson School in 1986 and, while here, was active on campus including serving as president of the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity. His leadership and community involvement continued after graduation and Tom became a senior executive for a medical research and development company. On September 11, 2001 he and three other passengers of Flight 93 became heroes when they prevented an attack on the U.S. Capitol.

After hearing Tom's story again, I couldn't help but think of our students. So many share his passion to make a positive difference in this world - through their leadership in school, in their business endeavors and in their communities. As you reflect upon the events of 10 years ago, remember Tom Burnett, Jr. and the other heroes of 9/11. In doing so I hope that, like Tom, you spend your lives choosing to "do something about it. "
