How Carlson School Career Services Can Help You Get the Job

Wednesday, August 16, 2023

As a Carlson School student, you’ll have access to our Carlson Business Career Center (CBCC). Offering a range of services and resources, the CBCC can help you get where you want to go—whether it’s switching industries, advancing at your current organization, or completely reinventing your career.

Here’s how we do it:

1. Career development before you begin your program

We prep and orient you early so you can develop a strategy to land a job when you graduate. Once you’re admitted into your program, you’ll receive career-related pre-work to complete over the summer so you can get the most out of career services during your time here. After you arrive on campus, you will attend a career orientation with the CBCC, where you will:

  • Meet career coaches
  • Understand career services and resources offered
  • Explore career paths
  • Review your resume, learn interview skills, and so much more!

2. A personalized approach to advancing your career—for life

Our small master’s program cohorts allow us to take a customized approach to supporting your goals. Each master’s program has a dedicated career advisor, and you can also work one-on-one with any of our six professional coaches on any aspect of career development such as:

  • Career, company, and industry exploration - Connecting you to resources and tools so you can build a bridge from your current position to the next
  • Resumes and LinkedIn profiles - Polishing your profile to most effectively showcase your experiences and skills
  • Networking and job search strategy - Growing your awareness of companies, industries, and positions to expand your job opportunities
  • Job interview prep - Developing your ability to ace the most critical component of the job search process and land that job
  • Job offer negotiations - Understanding offers and creating a strategy to negotiate a package that prioritizes what's important to you

Our coaches will assist you every step of the way—even after you graduate. Learn about alumni career services.

And if you just have a quick question, you can schedule a same-day, 15-minute Express Coaching appointment to meet with a coach.

3. Connecting you to a diverse and thriving business community

The Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) region is home to a wide variety of industries and more Fortune 500 companies per capita than any other large metro market in the U.S. With close ties to our robust business community, from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups and everything in between, we make sure you have access to professionals in the industries, companies, and roles you want to be in.

At the Carlson School, there are numerous opportunities to network with employers such as:

  • On-campus recruiting events - Local and national companies visit campus to recruit Carlson School students for full-time positions
  • Company info sessions and site visits - Learn more about company cultures, meet representatives, and expand your professional contacts
  • Company representatives in your classrooms, at networking events and receptions, and on panels
  • Career treks - Visit companies in cities across the U.S. to learn about their culture, meet representatives, and expand your network
  • Coffee with business development - Drop-in weekly with industry experts from the CBCC to learn about companies they're meeting with

4. Expanding your professional network

When it comes to job opportunities, your professional network is key. The CBCC offers many opportunities to build your network through events and workshops throughout the year. At networking receptions, career exploration panels, job search webinars, and more, you can connect with peers across the Carlson School, the business community, and our expansive alumni network—60,000+ strong across more than 120 countries.
