Class of 2024 - Consulting Enterprise

Background:

Financial services and US Army Reserve

Why MBA:

With two degrees in science-based fields, the barriers to advancing my career outside of my current employer were seemingly insurmountable. Industry experience alone was not enough to be considered for positions I felt qualified. Within two months of being accepted to the Carlson School of Management Full-time MBA program, I received an internship offer at a top technological research and advisory firm that was previously out of reach.

Why Carlson:

  • Experiential learning: Enterprise Program
  • Global focus: International experience requirement

Class of 2023 - Consulting Enterprise

Background:

Nonprofit and performing arts

Why MBA:

I was ready for a career switch and wanted to use an MBA to make this happen. I have also always been interested in studying business and thought now was the perfect opportunity to make the switch.

Why Carlson:

My experiences have mostly been in orchestras which are almost always composed of 80-90 musicians. I wanted to go to a school that had a similar class size. I like that I know everyone's name in my class and it is easy for everyone to get to know one another. I also like that such a small class size has given me ample leadership opportunities.

Muanya Onyiuke

Class of 2023 - Consulting Enterprise

Background:

Public Sector Strategy & Finance

Why MBA:

I pursued an MBA because I wanted to consolidate all the skills that I had gained in my career at that point, and develop new ones, to bridge the gap between private sector innovation and public service. I wanted to make a career change from internal public sector consulting to private sector consulting. My experience in the public sector gave me a broad and deep understanding of how the sector operates. To connect the dots between public service and the private sector, I knew I needed to further my education and experience across a wide array of private sector industries and business disciplines.

Why Carlson:

I was interested in the Carlson MBA program for a few reasons; the career support, the network, and the experiential learning opportunities, more specifically the consulting enterprise. I had lived in Minneapolis for 7 years prior to pursuing my MBA and I had built a strong sense of community. I went to the University of Minnesota for my undergraduate degree, and in my Junior year of college, I picked up the Management minor at Carlson. I remember sitting in my management class thinking to myself that if I had a second chance, I would love to be a Carlson student, which led me to explore this program.

Future Goals:

"My short-term goal was to make a career change from internal public sector consulting to private sector consulting. In the long-term, I would like to run a social enterprise that focuses on economic development in countries like Nigeria. Alternatively, I would like to be a Managing Director in the social arm of a consulting firm."
