“I'm passionate about business strategy and knew Carlson’s experiential learning and tight community would equip me for a career in consulting.”

My Story

I’ve always loved solving problems, making things run faster, better, stronger and I knew that to get where I want to go, I needed to ramp up my career. I was working at a start-up division at one of Minneapolis’ Fortune 500 financial services firms working on strategy and business development. I loved my job, but knew I was up for more.

Why Carlson?

I came to Carlson because the small community and enterprise programs provided a rich environment to learn consulting from very talented professionals. I also believed (and have confirmed) that Carlson is full of students who are driven, passionate and bright. By joining this school I’ve been able to grow professionally while making friendships I hope will last my lifetime. I used to believe getting an MBA was about “checking the box,” now I see it as changing your life and fast-tracking your career.

A Day with Sara - Monday, February 9th

6:30 - 7:45 a.m. Morning already? Time to kick start the week after an awesome weekend exploring an offer from a top management consulting firm! It takes a while to get out the door with two dogs to look after.
7:45 - 8:00 a.m. Drive to campus for my first class of the day. Monday/Wednesdays are my long days… You’ll see why.
8:00 - 9:45 a.m. International Strategy and Organization (elective) class where we discuss the international expansion of an industrial welding company, why the strategy failed and what we can learn from it.
9:55 - 11:35 a.m. Management and Organizational Behavior (core) class. Today we talked about personalities at work and specifically what “traits” individuals are born with vs the characteristics that are malleable by the “state” of affairs around us.
11:35 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. A quick break for lunch and time to catch up with friends. It’s recruiting season on campus so we’re all eager to hear how one another is doing!
12:00 - 1:20 p.m. Graduate Volunteer Consultant meeting. I’m a lead consultant on a volunteer project examining the 3-5 year growth potential for a Minneapolis-based transitional housing non-profit.
1:20 - 3:45 p.m. Time to catch up on email, read a few articles for my last class of the day, get ahead on a few quick bits of classwork and sneak in some career advice from an on campus mentor.
3:45 - 5:30 p.m. Financial Decisions (elective) class. Today we discussed how to create a Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) for a case assignment. Two teams presented their work and findings and we discussed the options as a class. H-MO teaches this one, and she’s awesome!!
5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Head home, feed the dogs and have dinner with my fiancé. Then, I head back to my computer to wrap up my day with email and a few to-do’s. Then, I happily head to sleep – yes, at 8:30 PM… On Campus Recruiting is exhausting, but the best kind of exhausting!
