Winter is Coming? Making the Most of It!

February 27th and 28th, 2015. Two days: two new experiences that I will cherish.  February had been a pretty cold month, with temperatures sometimes striking the sub-zero Fahrenheit range. Rather than restrict myself by staying warm indoors (a tempting option), I decided to embrace the snow, and have a great time while at it. I signed up for an alpine skiing, and a curling event organized by the Outdoor Adventure Club, and the Carlson Marketing Network respectively. 

Both these sports are pretty big in Minnesota, and sports that I had never tried, or in the case of curling, never heard of (Imagine my surprise to hear that curling is an Olympic sport!). Excited, and ignoring the fact that my term finals were just around the corner, I first went to Welch village, our alpine destination. I rented my snowboarding equipment, and fell at least 50 times as I learnt the toe-side and heel-side edging techniques from my infinitely patient classmates. The highlight of my day was in the end, when I snowboarded on the beginner’s trails without falling once. With my whole body aching, but feeling satisfied, I went to the curling event the next day. Curling is shuffleboard (or carrom, if you oversimplify it) on ice. Curling was less intense, but an equally engaging sport.

After what had been an intense internship search period, these events provided a much needed respite. The Carlson MBA program moves forward at breakneck speed, but it also provides multiple such opportunities where students can take a step back, relax, and connect better with peers in a fun setting. Plus, one gets to experience life that’s unique to Minnesota! 

Guess who is taking snowboarding classes offered to the Carlson MBAs next fall?
