Minnesota in the Spring
Thursday, May 7, 2015
It was touch and go there for a while, but this week our clan is spending most waking hours out of doors. There is nothing – NOTHING – like a Minnesota spring. Well, maybe a Wisconsin spring. You know.
I heard Garrison Keillor of Prairie Home Companion once say, “In the heart of every Minnesotan is the hope for one more snowstorm.” This report was confirmed to me by no less than two Minnesotans. Well we’ve had our “one more”, and then another for good measure. And now we bask in the sun! The trees are budding, blossoming, clouds of perfection! The birds are singing and the lakes, no longer ice-bound, are lapping their shores. I feel a poem coming on.
Boots, parka, farewell!
Sandaled feet and sunshine, hi!
My nose is sunburned!
While some of us prepare for finals and graduation, others get to bike, hike, run and play to their hearts content.
Some do both! Dave did the Goldy run, along with 7,200 other participants, and I did the sprint around the stadium to make it to the finish line in time to watch him cross it.
I know this is crunch time for students, but a bout of fresh air – hiking Minehaha Falls, dipping your toes into Lake Calhoun, or simply gathering some May flowers for your sweetheart, might just make all the difference.
