Advisory Board Members

The Carlson Funds Enterprise (CFE) is overseen by an advisory board comprised of senior investment professionals in the Twin Cities. The advisory board meets three times per year to review the operations of the CFE.

Dan Arlandson, UMF Investment Advisors
Dan serves as an investment manager for UMFIA, the entity that invests and manages the assets of the University of Minnesota Foundation. At UMFIA, Dan assists in asset allocation, due diligence, and manager selection across a variety of asset classes. Prior to joining UMFIA, Dan was a Senior Research Associate at Jeffrey Slocum & Associates, where he advised clients on hedge fund manager selection and portfolio construction. Previously, he was an Analyst at Validus Partners, a private equity firm focused on healthcare and business services. Dan began his career as a legislative assistant for the St. Paul City Council.  Dan holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas and an M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame.

Jason Deleeuw, Piper Jaffray
Mr. Deleeuw is a vice president and senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray covering financial services and technology companies. He had worked as a research analyst at Piper Jaffray from 2006-11 covering financial services companies. Prior to re-joining Piper Jaffray in 2014, Deleeuw was a senior analyst on the financial equities team at Pine River Capital from 2011-14. Deleeuw earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from Macalester College and a master's degree in business administration from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Darci Doneff, Piper Jaffray

Ms. Doneff is currently a managing director in the fixed income services department at Piper Jaffray. Prior to joining Piper Jaffray in 1995, Doneff was a managing director for Citigroup (formerly Smith Barney) for eight years. While at Citi, she served as the manager and head municipal trader and underwriter. At Piper Jaffray, Doneff manages a team of 34 fixed income professionals in the Municipal Trading, Underwriting and Sales Division. Doneff's team focuses on the marketing and distribution of new issue municipal debt throughout the country and in addition actively trades municipal securities both tax exempt and taxable in the secondary market. In 2009 her team successfully placed over 450 new issues totaling in excess of $8 billion par value. Doneff attended North Dakota State University, where she earned a degree in Agricultural Economics.

Marilyn Froelich, Bell State Bank & Trust

Ms. Froelich is an investment professional with over 30 years of insurance and institutional asset management experience. She is experienced in the critical areas of fixed income investment management, including portfolio management, credit research, risk analysis, strategy, policy development and reporting. Froelich has a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Science Degree from North Dakota State University. In addition to being a Chartered Financial Analyst, she is a Chartered Life Underwriter and Fellow, Life Office Management.

Todd Hedtke, Allianz Life Insurance Company

Mr. Hedtke has been with Allianz for 14 years, the last four years with Allianz Investment Management LLC . He leads investment activities related to general account investments. Prior to joining Allianz Todd held various finance and investment positions at Cargill, EBF& Associates and American Express. Hedtke received his Bachelor's degree from Hamline University and his MBA from the University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management. In addition to being a Chartered Financial Analyst, he is a Financial Risk Manager and Fellow of the Life Management Institute.

Phil Hildebrandt, Segall Bryant & Hamill

Mr. Hildebrandt is Chief Executive Officer for Segall Bryant & Hamill, a leading investment management firm located in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to joining SBH, Hildebrandt was Director of Marketing for CSI Asset Management, an investment subsidiary of The Prudential Investment Corporation. Hildebrandt has a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from the University of Minnesota and an MBA in finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He has also earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Mark Hood, Federated Insurance

Mr. Hood is a First Vice President and Director of Fixed Income Investments for Federated Insurance Companies. Hood has been with Federated for 19 years and currently oversees $4.5 billion of fixed income assets. Prior to joining Federated, he was a portfolio manager at Trustmark Insurance Companies. He received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Iowa in 1985. Hood is a CFA Charterholder, and a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Minnesota.

Jonathan Horick, Stevens Foster Financial Advisors

Mr. Horick is the Vice President, Investments at Stevens Foster Financial Advisors. Previously, Horick was a Principal and Portfolio Manager at Akros Capital, LLC. Mr. Horick has a diverse set of institutional investment experiences involving securities analysis for both public and private entities, and an extensive work history in equity financing and fixed-income objectives. He held positions at several investment managers in New York and the Twin Cities, including Millennium Partners, White Pine Capital, Deephaven Capital Management, Dougherty & Company and Sit Investment Associates. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst, and holds an inactive Certified Public Accountant certificate. Horick has a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Finance from Wartburg College and his MBA in Finance from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management.

Mark Jordahl, US Bancorp Wealth Management

Mr. Jordahl is President of U.S. Bancorp's Wealth Management Group, where he is responsible for all private-client wealth management services, including investment management, brokerage services, private banking, insurance, personal trust and estate services, philanthropic services, insurance, and financial planning. Under Jordahl's leadership, U.S. Bancorp's wealth management business group has developed a client service platform that provides three distinctive service models to meet the unique needs of high-net-worth, and ultra high-net-worth clients with investable assets of $100,000 to more than $100 million.

Jay Kiedrowski, Humphrey School of Public Affairs - University of Minnesota

Mr. Kiedrowski is a senior fellow in the Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. He teaches courses on public and nonprofit financial analysis and budgeting, organizational performance and change. Before coming to the University in 2004, Kiedrowski was the executive vice president for Wells Fargo and Company. He was responsible for leading institutional trust, institutional brokerage, and trust operations for the merged Northwest/Wells Fargo organization. Kiedrowski earned a B.S.M.E. in industrial engineering from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Arts from the University's School of Public Affairs. He also earned an Ed.D. from St. Mary's University of Minnesota.

Wan-Chong Kung, Nuveen Asset Management

Ms. Kung is the head of the U.S. Interest Rates & Governments Sector Team and a member of the Fixed-Income Strategy Committee at Nuveen Asset Management. As a senior fixed-income portfolio manager, she leads the Inflation Protected Securities, Intermediate Government Bond, and Intermediate Term Bond strategies, as well as related institutional portfolios, and co-manages the Core Bond strategy. Prior to joining the firm in 1993, Kung was a senior consultant for financial services firms at Cytrol Inc. and Global/Non-Dollar Sector Teams. She received a B.S. in economics from the University of the Philippines and an M.B.A. in information systems management from the University of Minnesota. Wan-Chong holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Minnesota.

David Kuplic, Advantus Capital Management

As Executive Vice President of Advantus, Mr. Kuplic co-leads the investment management of approximately $22 billion of client assets and is the Chief Investment Officer of Securian, Advantus's parent company. Kuplic has direct accountability for all of Securian's investments, as well as the asset management of all of Advantus's external insurance clients. Kuplic is also President of Advantus Series Fund, an investment company that offers fixed income and equity alternatives through life insurance and annuity products. Since starting in the investment industry in 1984, he has specialized in fixed income investment management.


Mark Simenstad, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans

Mr. Simenstad, serves as Thrivent Financial for Lutherans vice president and head of fixed income funds and separate accounts. In this role, he oversees the investment management of all fixed income mutual funds and separate accounts. Simenstad held a variety of positions, including head of fixed income research and portfolio manager, before leaving the organization in 1993. He rejoined the organization in 1999 and assumed his new position in October of 2002. Before rejoining Thrivent Financial, Simenstad was employed by Investment Advisers Inc. as vice president and portfolio manager. He subsequently joined Voyageur Asset Management as chief investment officer. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., in 1981. He earned an MBA from the University of Minnesota in 1983.

Matthew Thompson, Faegre Baker Daniels

Mr. Thompson is a Partner in the Minneapolis office of Faegre Baker Daniels LLP, one of the country's largest law firms. Thompson specializes in the formation, syndication and ongoing compliance requirements of registered and unregistered investment funds and their management organizations, as well as related products and services. Thompson also represents institutional investors in their review of prospective investments, and independent directors and trustees of mutual funds. He received this B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College and his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School.

Kathy Tune, Thomas, McNerney & Partners

Ms. Tune joined Thomas, McNerney & Partners from Piper Jaffray, where she was a health care analyst focused on medical technology companies. Her background also includes experience in new product development at Solvay, S.A. Projects at Solvay included the development of vaccines for the prevention of viral infections. Tune was also a Senior Scientist in molecular biology at the University of Minnesota, where she worked on the development of molecular biology based assays for the detection of infectious agents. Her educational background includes an M.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of Minnesota and an M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, where she was a Robert and Gail Buuck Scholar.

Thomas Welch, Wells Capital Management

Mr. Welch is the Midwest regional client services manager Wells Capital Management. Prior to joining Wells Capital Management in 2003, Welch served as senior vice president and director of portfolio management for Boatmen's Trust Company of St. Louis and as Midwest director of institutional advisory services for Bank of America Capital Management. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Southwest Baptist University.
