Master of Human Resources & Industrial Relations Pathways

Credit Waiver Pathways for Carlson Majors & Minors, Labovitz and Morris Students

The Master of Human Resources & Industrial Relations (MHRIR) program combines specialized HR expertise with business foundations to prepare you for strategic leadership roles. If you have a business degree or minor from the University of Minnesota, you can waive foundational credits in this program.

What are MHRIR Pathways?

If you've completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, you may qualify to waive business foundations credits in the Master of Human Resources & Industrial Relations program. You'll build on what you've already learned instead of repeating foundational coursework.

Qualifying students include:

  • Carlson Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) degree holders or Carlson minor students
  • University of Minnesota Duluth Labovitz School of Business and Economics graduates
  • University of Minnesota Morris Business and Management degree holders

Benefits of pathways:

  • Waive 6 to 10 credits depending on your completed undergraduate courses
  • Lower your total tuition costs
  • Graduate in as few as 2 semesters instead of 3 (depending on number of credits waived)
  • Or spread your remaining credits across 3 semesters for a lighter course load

Which Pathway is Yours?

Choose your undergraduate background to see how to qualify and how many credits you can waive.

Who qualifies? Students who earned a Carlson Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) degree or another University of Minnesota degree and a Carlson minor.

What is the benefit? Waive 10 credits of "Business Foundations" courses in the Minnesota Carlson MHRIR program. Instead of 18 Business Foundations credits, you only need to complete 8. Of the 8 remaining credits of Business Foundations, 4 must be from the "People Systems" bucket. The remaining 4 credits can be fulfilled with anything from the remainder of the Business Foundations list.

Additional prerequisite benefit: Completing BA 2551 or BA 3051 (or an equivalent or more advanced course) with a B or better will allow you to substitute the People Analytics prerequisite with a more advanced class.

Requirements: You must have a 3.0 or higher GPA in your undergraduate degree to qualify.

Who qualifies? University of Minnesota Duluth students with a bachelor's degree from the Labovitz School of Business and Economics (any major) with a B average or better.

Additional prerequisite benefit: Completing STAT 3612 (or an equivalent or more advanced course) with a B or better will allow you to substitute the People Analytics prerequisite with a more advanced class.

You can graduate in 2 semesters instead of 3, which lowers your tuition costs. Or take all 3 semesters and lighten your course load each semester.

Who qualifies? University of Minnesota Morris students who completed a BA in Business Management degree with a B average or better.

What is the benefit? Waive 6 credits of the 18 required MHRIR "Business Foundations" credits, reducing your total credits to complete the MHRIR program to 34. This lowers your tuition costs and may allow you to complete the program in 2 semesters instead of 3. Alternatively, you could take a lighter course load and finish your remaining 3rd semester credits in a flexible format (evening or online classes), allowing you to work.
