What Courses Will You Take?
The core curriculum — completed alongside all Full-Time MBA students — covers accounting, finance, marketing, supply chain, operations, strategy and economics.
STEM-designated electives draw from quantitative courses across Carlson's departments. Subject areas include:
- Statistical modeling
- Data analytics and programming
- Forecasting
- Operations research
Students who want to go deeper can pursue the Artificial Intelligence and Analytics for Business specialization, which includes machine learning, applied statistics, optimization, experimentation, data visualization and big data coursework.
The program is designed to be flexible. You work with an advisor to confirm that your course selections satisfy both the Management Science MBA credit requirements and any chosen specialization.
What Does STEM Designation Mean for International Students?
STEM designation refers to a formal classification by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that a program’s curriculum qualifies under Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics criteria. The Management Science MBA qualifies under CIP code 52.1301 (Management Science), one of the degree classifications DHS recognizes for STEM OPT eligibility. For business students, the practical effect is post-graduation work authorization.
International students on an F-1 visa typically receive 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. Graduates of STEM-designated programs can apply for a 24-month OPT extension, bringing the total to up to 36 months of authorized work experience, provided post-MBA employment meets the STEM requirements outlined by the government.
That three-year window matters. It gives international graduates more time to build a record with U.S. employers, more H-1B lottery cycles to participate in, and more flexibility during the job search itself.
We support this directly. The Carlson Business Career Center (CBCC) hosts programming specifically for Management Science MBA students on how to tell your ”STEM story” to employers, the hiring timeline for STEM-oriented roles, and networking strategies. The International Student Services team runs a dedicated workshop on the STEM OPT process for incoming students.
How Do You Apply?
You apply to the Management Science MBA directly. It is a separate application from the Full-Time MBA, and the two are not interchangeable after enrollment.
The admissions process and deadlines for the Management Science MBA are the same as for the standard Full-Time MBA. Applications are accepted in five rounds with deadlines on the first of October, December, February, April and June. International applicants must apply by the February round. Deadlines that fall on a weekend or holiday are extended through the next business day.

Why Choose Minneapolis-St. Paul?
Minneapolis-St. Paul has one of the highest concentrations of Fortune 500 headquarters per capita in the country. Target, UnitedHealth Group, U.S. Bancorp, General Mills and Medtronic are all headquartered here. Many of these companies recruit directly from Carlson, including recruiting Management Science MBA students. Beyond strong career access, the Twin Cities offer a comparatively affordable cost of living relative to many major graduate-school markets, especially when it comes to housing and everyday expenses.
What else does a Management Science MBA from Carlson offer?
Three things distinguish the experience: hands-on client work, direct faculty access, and measurable outcomes.
Hands-on experience through Enterprise Programs
Carlson’s Enterprise Programs put students to work with real clients before graduation. Through the Brand, Consulting, Funds and Ventures Enterprise Programs, MBA students collaborate with companies on actual business problems. Students interested in finance or investment management, for example, can help manage a student-run mutual fund with $50 million in assets from real clients through the Funds Enterprise.
A small cohort with full access to the Full-Time MBA network
The Management Science MBA cohort has roughly nine students. Every student works closely with faculty, career coaches and the broader Full-Time MBA network of about 75 peers, with career coaching from the Carlson Business Career Center available to everyone in the program.
Career outcomes
Over the past three years, 86% of Carlson Full-Time and Management Science MBA graduates secured employment within three months of graduation, with an average starting base salary of $135,912 and a mean signing bonus of $31,242, according to Carlson Full-Time MBA employment reports. Healthcare, consulting and financial services were the top hiring sectors. 84% of graduates stayed in the Midwest.
Carlson has also been accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) since 1920. Fewer than 6% of business schools worldwide hold that accreditation, a meaningful benchmark for international students weighing U.S. programs.
