Inside the Carlson MBA Admissions Process

Last updated November 14, 2025

Considering an MBA at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management? The Carlson Full-Time MBA offers a powerful combination of rigorous academics, hands-on experience, and direct access to the thriving Minneapolis–Saint Paul business community. Betsy Ryan, Senior Associate Director of Admissions, answers some of the most common questions applicants ask about the Carlson MBA.

What’s the Most Overlooked Strategic Advantage of the Carlson MBA?

One of the standout advantages of the Carlson MBA program is our location in the heart of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul—a vibrant, diverse, and economically powerful region. The metro area boasts an exceptional concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, fast-growing start-ups, and mission-driven nonprofits. This gives our students direct access to a wide range of industries including healthcare, finance, consumer goods, technology, manufacturing, and agribusiness.

Being deeply embedded in this ecosystem means our students don’t just study business—they experience it firsthand. Through networking events, guest lectures, and hands-on projects with real clients in our Carlson Enterprise program, students engage directly with industry leaders. Our Midwest location should not be overlooked; it’s a strategic advantage that shapes the entire Carlson MBA experience—from the classroom to the internship to post-degree careers.

What Steps Take Place After You Submit Your MBA Application?

We consider an application complete once all required materials are submitted. To avoid delays, we recommend applicants finish a few days before the deadline to allow time for letters of recommendation, test scores, or language reports to arrive.

Starting early also lets you explore our test waiver review process, which may allow some applicants to qualify for a GMAT or GRE waiver. Learn how to request a GRE/GMAT waiver.

After we receive your application and supporting documents, our team conducts an initial review to decide whether to invite you for a live interview. The interview helps us assess your background, goals, and how the Carlson MBA fits with your aspirations.

Following the interview, your application moves to a formal review by the admissions committee. Using a holistic approach, every application is carefully evaluated before a final decision—admit, waitlist, or deny.

Carlson MBA Admissions — Key Takeaways

  1. Application deadlines: Submit early to ensure all materials (recommendations, test scores, transcripts) arrive on time.

  2. Test waivers: Carlson Full-Time MBA offers GMAT/GRE waivers for qualified applicants who apply in advance.

  3. Holistic review: Admissions decisions are based on the full application, not a single factor like test scores or GPA.

What Makes an MBA Essay Stand Out to the Carlson Admissions Team?

We place a high value on the personal essay because it reveals what applicants truly care about and how much effort they’re willing to invest in achieving their goals.

A trend we’ve noticed recently is that some candidates speak in very broad terms about why they’re interested in the Carlson MBA, such as highlighting our strong alumni network, excellent faculty, or impressive career outcomes. While these are strengths we’re proud of, they’re also common to many top MBA programs, and such responses can feel surface-level.

The most compelling essays go deeper. They draw thoughtful, specific connections between the applicant’s goals and the unique features of Minnesota Carlson—whether it’s our Enterprise programs, our strong ties to the Twin Cities business community, or the innovative work coming out of our institutes and faculty research. Show us that you’ve done your research, that you’ve reflected on how you’ll leverage Carlson’s resources to achieve your goals, and that you see Carlson not just as a great MBA, but the best MBA for you.

What Does the MBA Interview Process at Carlson Involve?

Historically, we’ve interviewed just under 90% of all completed applications. These interviews are conducted by trained staff, faculty, and graduate assistants, and follow a mix of informational and behavioral formats. We assess candidates not only on the content of their responses but also on their communication skills.

While remote (Zoom) interviews remain the preferred format for most applicants, we also provide a limited number of in-person, on-campus interviews for those who want to take advantage of that opportunity. We encourage candidates to select the interview style where they feel most confident and comfortable.

How Does the Impromptu Video Essay Differ from the Live Interview?

We advise candidates to carefully follow the directions in the application and take their time. Unlike the live interview, the impromptu video essay lets us see how applicants think on their feet, communicate under light pressure, and express themselves authentically without extensive preparation.

You’ll have two full minutes to respond, which is plenty of time to give an impactful answer. Don’t panic if you make a misstep—pause, breathe, and recalibrate. And remember, we use a holistic review process; this is just one of many evaluation points. Learn how to prepare for your video essay.

What Should International MBA Applicants Know About the STEM‑Designated Degree?

International students looking to take advantage of a STEM-designated degree should apply to the Management Science MBA rather than the standard Full-Time MBA. Both programs share the same core coursework and features, but the Management Science MBA includes additional quantitative rigor and the STEM designation, which can be especially beneficial for international students seeking data-intensive roles and the 36-month OPT extension.

What is Your Favorite Spot on the University of Minnesota Campus?

Just steps from our building is the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area—a federally protected natural corridor that winds through the Twin Cities. No matter the season, it offers breathtaking views and plenty of outdoor activities. It adds a unique and energizing element to the Carlson MBA experience.

What Additional Insights Should MBA Applicants at Carlson Know?

One of my favorite things about our student community is their deep commitment to making an impact beyond the classroom.

Carlson 4 Community (C4C), founded in 2005 by Full-Time MBA students, embodies this spirit. It brings together students, alumni, and faculty to support local causes and strengthen ties with the Twin Cities community. Its signature event, the Carlson MBA Charity Auction, is a beloved tradition that raises funds for a local nonprofit chosen by students each year. It’s a powerful example of Carlson students leading with purpose and creating positive change.
