Tuesday, January 28, 2025
Meet the Carlson School community and learn about the experiences and career connections we offer.
What was your initial reason or motivation for pursuing an MS in Finance?
My motivation for pursuing the Master of Science in Finance - Research Track stems from my aspiration to undertake a PhD in Finance. While I already held a master’s degree, my earlier studies focused on preparing for a career in the industry. Recognizing that the skill set required for a doctoral degree in Finance differs significantly, I sought a program that could provide the academic foundation and research exposure needed for success in a doctoral program.
The research track at the Carlson School offers comprehensive PhD-level coursework in both theoretical and empirical finance, essential components for doctoral studies that were not emphasized in my prior education. This program serves as a crucial bridge between my industry-oriented background and academic aspirations, providing the rigorous preparation necessary for a successful transition to a PhD program.
Why did you choose the Carlson School?
I chose the Carlson School for its exceptional academic environment and world-class faculty, who consistently publish in top-tier journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and The Review of Financial Studies.
The MS in Finance research track provides rigorous training nearly equivalent to first-year PhD coursework, offering invaluable preparation for future doctoral studies. Additionally, Carlson’s strong track record of PhD placements reflects the high quality of its academic training and support.
These factors convinced me that Carlson would provide the ideal environment to develop my research capabilities and prepare for a doctoral program.
What has been or was your most valuable Carlson School experience or lesson?
The most valuable part of my Carlson School experience has been the opportunity to take PhD-level courses. These classes have provided me with a solid academic foundation while allowing me to build close connections with faculty and PhD students.
Additionally, I was fortunate to work as a Research Assistant with Professor Erik Loualiche, which exposed me to cutting-edge research methods and strengthened my empirical skills. These experiences equipped me with the technical expertise and research acumen necessary for doctoral studies while confirming my passion for academic research.
Outside of coursework, the mentorship I received has been transformative. Faculty members have guided me in exploring my research interests, refining my PhD applications, and developing a deeper understanding of academic life. These connections have been invaluable in shaping my career path and instilling confidence in my ability to pursue advanced research.

What advice would you give to help potential applicants gain admission into Carlson’s MS in Finance program?
Preparing well in mathematics and economics is critical, as the PhD-level finance courses in this program differ significantly from standard undergraduate or MBA finance classes. A solid grasp of economic theory and mathematical tools is indispensable for success.
Emphasize any prior research experience or coursework that demonstrates your readiness to engage in rigorous academic training.
Most importantly, articulate a clear vision for your academic career and how the Carlson School of Management’s program aligns with your goals. This preparation will position you well for both admission and success in the program.
