The Master of Science in Business Analytics & Artificial Intelligence (MSBAi) program combines data science, machine learning and business strategy to prepare you for leadership roles in analytics, artificial intelligence and data-driven decision-making. If you have a business or economics degree from the University of Minnesota, you can accelerate your path through these pathways.

What are MSBAi Pathways?

If you've completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, you may qualify to waive core or elective credits in the Master of Science in Business Analytics & Artificial Intelligence program. You'll build on what you've already learned instead of repeating foundational coursework.

Qualifying students include:

  • Carlson Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) degree holders or Carlson minor students
  • University of Minnesota Twin Cities Economics degree holders (BS, BA, Quantitative BA or Business Economics)
  • You must earn a B or better in the course that maps to each MSBAi waiver

Who qualifies? Students who earned a Carlson Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) degree or another University of Minnesota degree and a Carlson minor.

What is the benefit? Waive up to 10 credits of required and elective courses in the MSBAi program, lowering your tuition costs and lightening your course load.

Which courses are waived?

You can waive up to 10 credits of required courses in the MSBAi program by taking the following Carlson undergraduate courses and earning a B or better.

  1. IDSC 4211 - Interactive Data Visualization for BA; and

  3. IDSC 4521 - Business Analytics in Action
MSBA 6131 - Introduction to Business Analytics in R (3 credits)
Choose from a list of Carlson undergraduate elective courses availableIf you complete a course on the electives list, you will waive a corresponding elective course, up to 4 credits total, in MSBAi.

Who qualifies? University of Minnesota Twin Cities students who earn one of the following degrees with a B average or better:

  • Bachelor of Science in Economics
  • Bachelor of Arts in Economics
  • Quantitative Bachelor of Arts in Economics
  • Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics

What is the benefit? Waive 3 to 10 credits of required and elective courses in the MSBAi program, lowering your tuition costs and lightening your course load.

Which courses are waived?

Required courses:

  • MSBA 6121 - Introduction to Statistics for Data Scientists (3 credits): This is automatically waived for all Economics majors.
  • MSBA 6441 - Causal Inference and Experimentation (3 credits): This is waived if you have completed ECON 4261 - Advanced Econometrics.

Elective courses: Waive up to 4 credits of MSBAi electives by completing any 2 courses from the list below. Each course counts for 2 credits.

  • ECON 4751 - Financial Economics
  • ECON 4758 - Advanced Financial Economics
  • ECON 4538 - Advanced Labor Economics
  • ECON 4831 - Cost-Benefit Analysis
  • SCO 3056 - Supply Chain Planning and Control
  • SCO 3059 - Quality Management and Lean Six Sigma

How to Apply for MSBAi Pathways

You will qualify for the credit waiver based on the courses you've completed with a B or better on your official transcript. You must start the MSBAi program within 3 years of completing your undergraduate degree.
