A month after winning the Carlson School’s Student of the Year award, Melanie Vossberg, ’17 BSB, has collected another accolade with a much more interesting name: She’s the recipient of the 2017 Tomato Can Loving Cup award.

The venerable trophy has been, per the engraving on its side, “presented annually to that person who in the course of the year has rendered the most distinctive service to the school” since alumnus Henry Hilton, ’29 BSB, cheekily fastened a tomato soup can to his mother’s wooden candlestick in 1929.

Vossberg, an International Business and Marketing major from Chaska, Minnesota, certainly fits the award’s description. As president of the GLOBE student organization, she’s helped incoming international exchange students acclimate to the Carlson School and life in a new country. She’s also served as a Carlson Ambassador and a Carlson Crew leader, providing guidance for prospective and first-year students, worked as a marketing peer assistant, participated in the Carlson Brand Enterprise, and coordinated communications for Delta Sigma Pi—all while maintaining a 3.81 GPA.

“She has put her heart into making this community better,” one nominator wrote of Vossberg.

“We know that Melanie embodies what it means to be a force for good and we are proud to say she is a Carlson grad,” Kim Turner-Rush, assistant dean for the school’s undergraduate program, said in presenting Vossberg with her award at Monday's undergraduate commencement ceremony.

Vossberg will be joining Nielsen as part of its innovation team in Chicago.
