Carlson School undergraduates benefit local women's shelter through annual charity auction.
Recently, the fourth annual Charity Auction hosted by Carlson School student organization, Women in Business (WIB), raised more than $8,200 to benefit Women's Advocates. Held at TCF Bank Stadium, the event was attended by over 170 Carlson School students, parents, faculty, and staff, as well as local professionals and WIB alumni.
Women's Advocates is a St.Paul-based shelter for battered women and their children. In addition to providing shelter, the organization provides advocacy, personalized support (including mental health therapy and aftercare services), education, and resources for nearly 1,000 women and children every year.
"We truly think Women's Advocates is a remarkable organization that is in need of our support," says Stephanie Miller, Carlson School student, WIB member, and coordinator of the event. "Not only does WIB support Women's Advocates through our annual charity auction, but members also volunteer throughout the year at the shelter, doing everything from cleaning out the storage closets to reading with the children."
Kate Suchomel, development and community relations coordinator,Women's Advocates, says, "WIB has been an amazing partner and this year's charity auction was an exceptional event. Women's Advocates is honored and proud to have such an amazing, talented, and passionate group of young women supporting the families that stay at the shelter."
The theme of the night's festivities was "Come Fly With Us" and included a silent and live auction that featured various items including Twins tickets, restaurant gift cards, resort stays, and a flight voucher. Befitting the theme, the event also included a fashion show-featuring outfits donated by Kohl's department stores-that represented different countries; the clothes were later included in the auction.
Music entertainment was provided by duo Zack Dyer and Leah Tousignant, and Basses Wild, a University men's a cappella group.
