Sophomore Lee Stecklein is the youngest player on the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team

Carlson School sophomore and University of Minnesota honors student Lee Stecklein will journey to Sochi, Russia on Feb. 1 to compete in the 2014 Olympic Games. She is the youngest of 21 players named to the 2014 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team earlier this month.

In balancing a demanding athletic schedule with a full undergraduate course load, Stecklein demonstrates a drive to achieve. She says taking the spring semester off from school won't be easy, but she's excited for the opportunity to compete on an international level.

"It is hard. I feel I just got used to college and I leave for a whole different experience. It's crazy, but this is the opportunity of a lifetime," she told

As a freshman, Stecklein helped the Gophers women's hockey team to a national championship. Last season, she scored three goals, including two game winners, and had nine assists. Stecklein plans to return to the Gophers for the 2013-14 season.

Team USA will kick off their race for gold on Feb. 8 when they face Finland.
