Thursday, September 26, 2024

Carlson School of Management Information & Decision Sciences Professor Alok Gupta is receiving the INFORMS Fellow Award, a lifetime achievement recognition from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).

The INFORMS Fellow Award is one of the highest honors in the operations research profession. Gupta is the first honoree from the Carlson School, and this year's fellows marks only the second class in the award’s history to include University of Minnesota professors.

“I am honored to be recognized with this rare award for Information Systems researchers,” says Gupta, the Curtis L. Carlson Chair in Information Management. “I am fortunate to be in a school with great research culture and a department filled with outstanding collaborators and friends; I owe a great deal of gratitude to all my collaborators on the professional front and my family for all their support.”

A committee evaluated nominees for their contributions to education, service, management, research, and practice of operations research, management science, and analytics. Gupta is one of 12 members in this year’s class of INFORMS Fellows, which includes Professor Shuzhong Zhang of the UMN College of Science and Engineering. The group will be honored at the INFORMS Annual Meeting in October.

Among Gupta’s research interests include artificial intelligence and the future of work, data communications, and information security and digital rights management. He has more than 90 research publications including those in top journals such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, and MIS Quarterly. Additionally, he has served as publisher of MIS Quarterly since 2004. He also teaches at the undergraduate, MBA, and PhD levels.

His previous honors include the Association of Information Systems (AIS) LEO Award, the INFORMS ISS President’s Service Award, the AIS Fellow Award, the INFORMS ISS Fellow Award, the INFORMS Design Science Award (2001, 2012, and 2021), the INFORMS ISS Practical Impact Award, and the AIS Impact Award.
