HR Tomorrow Conference Wins High Marks
“I love the information shared, the cutting-edge research, and the opportunity to reconnect with old colleagues and classmates,” said one of the 310 HR professionals who attended the much-anticipated 2016 HR Tomorrow conference on April 22. Read the full story here.
James Dworkin, ’77 PhD-IR, Chancellor of the Purdue University North Central campus for more than 16 years, was honored in April by the university’s Board of Trustees on his retirement. The trustees surprised Dworkin with a resolution of appreciation and by authorizing the naming of the James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex on the North Central campus. Jerome (Jerry) Barrett, ’63, spent his career working in the areas of mediation and arbitration and, over the years, amassed a large collection of material on the topics. In 2012 he donated his collection to George Washington University, and in May of this year, he shared information on his collection at the 2016 LERA Annual Meeting. Read the full story here.
HRIR Alumnus in China Shares His Expertise
Arnold Guo, '07, along with several HR colleagues in China, recently published a book, “Win with HR,” which summarizes their HR insights, experiences, and best practices. In an effort to support continuous learning and sharing across the globe, the professional development committee of the CHRLS Alumni Association asked Guo and two other authors, Freda Chang and Sharon Yang, to highlight some of the content of their book. As the sounds of Pomp and Circumstance filled the air on May 16, close to 700 students filed into Mariucci Arena as current Carlson School of Management graduate students and marched out as alumni! Seventy of those students earned a Master of Arts in Human Resources and Industrial Relations, and two, Karyn Dossinger and Yeonka Kim, earned a PhD in Business Administration with a concentration in Work and Organizations. Class of 2016 Exceeds Class Gift Goals
Congratulations to the Class of 2016 for exceeding both their monetary and participation goals for the 2016 MA-HRIR Class Gift! They raised $1,100.60 and, due to a generous donation from John and Nancy Lindahl, were eligible for a $1,000 match, doubling the impact of their efforts! Hats off to our newest alumni for showing their commitment to the Carlson School through their support of the MA-HRIR Class Gift.
UPDATE: Online MOOC Course
All four courses that make up the specialization in human resources being taught online through Coursera are now up and running, and as of June 20, there have been 17,314 enrollments and 1,178 completers. One of those students, Massimo Zilio from Italy, recently ordered a University of Minnesota sweatshirt and shared the image with Professor John Budd, one of the four core instructors of the series.
Professor Andy Van de Ven, the Vernon H. Heath Chair of Organizational Innovation and Change, is retiring from the Carlson School’s Department of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship after 35 years. He taught courses on the management of innovation and change, organizational behavior, and research methods in both the SME and WOrg departments. He is the author of more than 100 research papers and is the co-author of a dozen books. Congratulations, and best wishes!
Adjunct Instructors Share Best Practices, Networking During Spring Meeting
The 2nd Annual Adjunct Lunch and Workshop, hosted by the Department of Work and Organizations, took place in late April. The 20 attendees included adjunct instructors who taught in the MA-HRIR program in the past year. Read the full story here.
CHRLS Faculty, Staff, Alumni Play Important Part in LERA Annual Meeting
The 2016 annual meeting of LERA (Labor and Employment Relations Association) was held in Minneapolis in May, and many faculty, staff, and alumni of the CHRLS were involved in the four-day event, the theme of which was “Employment Relations in the Age of Uber: Assessing our Past, Present, and Future.” Read the full story here.
Welcome to Amy Danzeisen
Amy Danzeisen is the new Admissions Associate for the MA-HRIR program. She works on all things admissions-related within the program, including recruitment strategy, prospective student information, admissions processing, admitted student recruitment, and more. Before coming to the Carlson School, she was in charge of recruitment and admissions at the University of Minnesota's Technological Leadership Institute. She has worked at the University in various roles since 2000 and holds a BA degree in English from St. Cloud State University. Welcome, Amy!
New LES Director Named
The Labor Education Service (LES) staff have elected Monica Bielski Boris as their next director, effective July 1, replacing Barb Kucera, whose second three-year term ends June 30.
UPDATE: Governor Dayton Signs Legislation Recognizing Capitol Builders
The “Who Built Our Capitol?” project and curriculum attracted the attention of middle school teachers in Owatonna, whose students started a petition to get a plaque placed in the statehouse honoring these workers. As explained in this follow-up article, Gov. Dayton recently signed a bill to honor those workers.
