Who are you and what do you do?
Farmhouse Market is the little market that's big on technology and ideally suited for rural communities who are struggling to keep their local grocery store. Farmhouse Market is a small-format local, organic and natural foods store that is open 24/7 to its members thanks to technology like a keycard entry system, self-checkout and remote video surveillance. Because of technology, Farmhouse Market is primarily unstaffed which helps reduces the costs associated with staffing the store but keeps food accessible around the clock AND affordable.
What was the inspiration for your idea?
Our family moved from the twin cities back to my rural hometown three years ago and missed the "big-city" variety in retail food outlets that we had grew accustomed to in the twin cities. The need became even more apparent for us when our (then) 2-year-old daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy and we wanted to pursue diet changes to help control her seizures. We wanted to make local, organic and natural foods easily accessible for our family and community by bringing it all together in store, conveniently located downtown and open 24/7.
What opportunities or benefits have developed due to your involvement in MN Cup so far?
We were also a 2015 MN Cup semi-finalist, which was really helpful to us as we worked toward opening our pilot location of Farmhouse Market. The opportunities to connect with mentors, revise our business plan and really put thought into where we were going with this idea were so helpful as we prepared for our grand opening.
This year, we feel a bit more buttoned up and are thrilled to have our pilot location up and running so we can participate in the MN Cup again....and see where it takes us!
