Graduate Certificates Taxation Requirements & Deadlines

Taxation certificates are associated with the Master of Business Taxation (MBT) Program which is a rigorous, challenging, and rewarding experience that will deepen your understanding of the field of taxation and illuminate new professional paths. 

We look for applicants who have strong academic backgrounds and a commitment to improving their professional communities. Applicants should have a strong familiarity with the fundamentals of business management.

Prerequisites

Candidates must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a comparable degree from an officially recognized college or university outside of the U.S. (in any field)
  •  Completed ACCT 2050 Introduction to Financial Reporting and ACCT 5135 Fundamentals of Federal Income Tax (or their equivalents)*

*We consider and conditionally admit applicants before they have taken these courses, but they must complete them with a C or better before enrolling in MBT courses or certificates.

Unofficial transcripts can be submitted through the online application or emailed to mbamsapp@umn.edu for attachment to your application file. Candidates will need to submit a transcript from each college or university where a candidate completed coursework. All transcripts must be received before the application is marked as complete and will be reviewed by the admission committee.

Personal Statement: This section of the application helps the admissions committee get to know you better as an individual, and allows the committee to evaluate the extent to which your skills, interests, values, and career goals are well-suited for the program. Please write a personal statement using no more than 500 words (1 page), that addresses the following questions:

  • Briefly describe your short-term and long-term career goals. 
  • Why are you choosing to pursue a certificate at this time in your career, and what are you hoping to accomplish by doing so?
  • Why are you interested in pursuing a certificate at the Carlson School of Management?
  • What do you feel makes you a strong candidate for the program? 

Use this essay to share information that is not presented elsewhere in the application. Your statement should be limited to no more than 250 words (1 page).

The application fee is $75 (non-refundable) for U.S. citizens, international applications, and U.S. residents with foreign credentials. Your application fee will be waived if you have been on active duty in the U.S. military within three years of submitting your application.

Submit a current resume that includes job responsibilities and accomplishments. Resume can include part-time work, internships, graduate assistants, or co-ops as necessary.

If English is not your first language, you must submit scores from the one of the following tests. Scores must be less than 2 years old when you apply.

You do not need to take an English test if:

  • You have completed your previous education solely in English in a country where English is not an official language. Your transcript must indicate that English was the language of instruction, or you must provide a statement from the university indicating that English was the sole language of instruction in order to be exempt from the testing requirement.

    or

  • You have completed the last 2 years of a bachelor's degree or 1 year of a graduate school (full-time) in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

You are not exempt if you have lived in an English-speaking country for several years, unless you meet one of the above requirements.

TOEFL scores must be sent to institution code 6874 (U OF MINNESOTA MNNPLS). 

IELTS scores may be sent to us by completing a Test Report Form indicating us as a receiving organization:

PTE Academic scores may be sent to the Carlson School MBA Programs office using program code JP3-5T-48.

Certificates are not able to offer student visas to candidates who live outside the United States.  If you are living in the United States on another type of visa, you are eligible to take in-person courses.  For candidates unable to attend classes in-person, we encourage you to explore our certificates that can be completed virtually or a degree program that can grant a student visa.

We will accept applications after the deadline if space is available.

Decisions

Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. All applicants will receive an admissions decision via email. The process can take four to six weeks.
