Summer in Minnesota is so special, and the 4th of July weekend has always been my favorite break. Every bud in the garden looks like it is ready to explode into bloom, and the grill beckons. I plan to spend this weekend hosting our daughter and six of her friends.

Writing this from Nagoya, Japan where I am running the junior faculty consortium of the Academy of International Business (AIB), and preparing to introduce Professor James Mirrlees, the 1996 Nobel Laureate in Economics, who is addressing the consortium.

Since learning of my appointment, I've thought a lot about the role of an interim dean. Is it simply to tread water until a permanent dean is found? Is it to minimize disruption and stay the course? Are we in, to paraphrase Dr. Seuss, "the waiting place?"
