The Carlson Advantage

Offered through the Department of Work and Organizations (WOrg), the Carlson School's PhD in Human Resources and Industrial Relations program is internationally recognized for preparing students for careers as faculty members across many disciplines. Here, you'll learn from faculty members who are recognized as leaders in their respective areas of expertise including Organizational Behavior, Human Resources, and Labor and Organizational Economics; hold leadership positions in major professional associations in their field (e.g., Academy of Management, and Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology); and serve in editorial positions at a number of top-tier journals. Plus, our faculty-to-student ratio is small to maximize opportunities for mentorship and collaboration.

You'll also have the chance to work with leading scholars in related fields such as strategic management, I/O psychology, applied economics, public affairs and sociology. The Carlson School PhD in HRIR program trains motivated and research-focused students to become scholars and subject-matter experts within the field of HRIR. Students also become prepared for faculty careers in management, HRIR, and HRM departments at top business schools and/or industrial and labor relations schools.

As a doctoral student, you'll be provided with a competitive stipend, travel and research funds, and have access to superior academic facilities including two behavioral research laboratories; a large, dedicated subject pool; and an on-site field-specific library.
