The Carlson Global Institute team is here to support you as you embark on what we hope will be among the most rewarding and empowering experiences of your life. The first step is to apply for admission as an international exchange student.

Application Deadlines

Submitting your application by the deadline will ensure that you receive your paperwork from the University of Minnesota in time to apply for a student visa. You may apply before the deadline, but to do so you must be nominated by your home school coordinator.

  • Fall application deadline: April 1
  • Spring application deadline: September 1

Late applications will delay your acceptance to the program and important visa paperwork. If you cannot submit your application materials by the deadline, email exchgin@umn.edu with an expected delivery date.

Application Instructions

Nomination

Before you begin your application, make sure you have been officially nominated by your home school. We only accept nominations from our partner schools.

1. Application Form

Complete the University of Minnesota Application for International Exchange Admission:

Fall 2013

Spring 2014

Academic Year 2013-2014

Important:

  • Do not apply online
  • Do not submit an application fee
  • Review all documents for name consistency

2. Financial Certification Statement

Complete the Financial Certification Statement, found on page 4 of the application.

3. Proof of Financial Support

In addition to completing the Financial Certification Statement, you must provide proof of funding for your semester abroad. The documentation must match the amount of funding you indicate in the "Sources of Funding" section of the form. For 2013-2014 you must provide documentation of at least:

  • $8,900 (Fall or Spring)
  • $17,800 (Academic Year)

Examples include bank statements, a letter from your bank, or a letter from a government agency or organization.

4. Transcript

Submit an English language transcript from the school you currently attend or most recently attended.

5. Resume or Curriculum Vitae

Submit a current English language resume or CV.

6. Proof of English Language Proficiency

Submit proof of English language proficiency: TOEFL score of 550 (written), 213 CBT, or 79 IBT, 80 MELAB or 6.5 IELTS.

If you do not have test scores, submit a letter from your exchange coordinator stating that your English proficiency is adequate to succeed in advanced university-level business classes.

We waive this requirement for native English speakers.

7. Passport Photocopy

Submit a photocopy of the picture and information page of your passport.

8. Submit Your Application

When your application is complete, submit copies by mail to:

You must send your documents by email (exchgin@umn.edu) or fax first, but we need the original documents to process your visa paperwork.
