Dubai's International Humanitarian City: Leading Public and Private Sector Innovation to Respond to Crises
October 25, 2016

Featuring remarks from her Excellency Mrs. Shaima Al Zarooni, Advisor and Acting CEO of Dubai's International Humanitarian City

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every 113 people around the world is now either a refugee, an asylum-seeker, or an internally displaced person. Fifty-one percent of them are children.

In a world of crises and conflicts, whole populations of men, women, and children are not able to access the minimum standards of security, food, clean water, shelter, education, and health. Additionally, due to the interconnectivity of the world, regions exterior to the source of these issues increasingly find themselves impacted whether economically, politically, and/or in terms of security and public health by strife elsewhere. For the sake of those directly or indirectly impacted by such conflicts it is significantly important to collectively and actively ensure effective and efficient engagement of public and private sectors for better emergency preparedness to respond ot crises and proactive development solutions to prevent crises from occurring.

The International Humanitarian City puts Dubai's expertise in transport, logistics, and innovation to work, enabling aid agencies to reach victims of crises and and alleviate the suffering of those who are scarred by hunger and poverty. Since its establisment, IHC has grown to become the world's largest and busiest logistics hub for humanitarian aid with nine UN agencies and more than 50 NGOs and commercial entities within its member pool.

Her Excellency Mrs. Shaima Al Zarooni is the Advisor and Acting CEO of International Humanitarian City.  In 2016, she was appointed Director of Special Initiatives assisting HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in Her capacity as UN Messenger of Peace.  She is the Founder and President of Camp01, a Public Benefit Corporation based in Minnesota, USA. She is also the Vice-President and a board member of the August Medical Foundation, also based in Minnesota. Her Excellency is the First Arab Woman on the Start Network Board of Trustees.
