Students in Action - Irving, TX

The Carlson Funds Enterprise encourages CFE students to meet with management teams of the companies whose stock they are researching. Steve Oshyn and Nathan Zhao's team will be pitching DAR (Darling International) this December and to gain more insight into the company, Steve and Nathan traveled to Irving, Texas to meet with Darling International managers at their headquarters and to do a tour of one of their rendering plants. While at their headquarters, Steve and Nathan met with CFO and IR Directors and met with the Plant Manager at the rendering plant.

More than 100 people gathered at the Oak Grill to congratulate the 37 new CFA chartholders in attendance. Included in this group were two CFE students, Masha Trush and Clement Lau. Attendees enjoyed a keynote speech from Dr. Srilata "Sri" Zaheer. Dr. Zaheer shared her wisdom and experience about acceptable risk in financial services, while encouraging the honorees to always put the client first.
Faculty Case Competition

The tables were turned on Carlson School educators in the annual Net Impact Faculty Case Competition. For the first time ever, all four Enterprise directors competed in the annual Carlson Faculty Case Competition. Funds and Consulting Enterprise Directors, Jerry Caruso and Toby Nord, fought on the "Green Team", while Brand and Consulting's Enterprise Director's, Dave Hopkins and Phil Miller, battled on team "Dangerous Intellect". These four took on the debate of whether or not resources should continue to be given to a new "green" product line.
U.S. Bank Student Visit

Students in the Carlson Funds Enterprise were invited to attend a site visit at US Bank last Friday. Students met with the Director of Loan Capital Markets, Christopher Zinn (CFE alum '98), to learn about the different career opportunities available throughout the company and how his work directly relates to what students are doing in the classroom.
Carlson Finance Students Meet Warren Buffett

For the last 8 years, students from the University of Minnesota have been invited to attend a one-day event in Omaha, Nebraska hosted by Warren Buffett. During the event, students get the opportunity to tour Buffett's first furniture store, go out to lunch with him, and listen to the expert talk about his life-long experiences and valuable insight into the financial industry. This year, 5 members of the Carlson Funds Enterprise had the pleasure of attending the annual trip.
Carlson School MBA Team Wins ACG Cup

A team of Carlson School MBA students took home first place in the recent Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) Cup competition. Competition finals took place Thursday, February 9, in the Executive Conference Rooms at the Carlson School. Team members include Mun Hoe Sze Tho, Jenny Cutshall, Peder Hatling, Brandon Dorsey, Ben Zastrow and Tom Paluta. Four of these students are currently a part of the Carlson Funds Enterprise program.
The ACG Cup is a case study competition designed to give students experience and invaluable insights into mergers and acquisitions, investment banking, financial advisory, and private equity. Each case study provides students with an opportunity to present valuation, capital markets, and M&A strategic advice to a panel of seasoned M&A professionals from within the ACG community.
